Several reroutes for Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses on campus issued during fall break have been extended due to inclement weather.
Jay Rank, MTD’s operations director, told The Daily Illini in an email that a contractor notified him of a water main leak on Nov. 21. Several bus lines were rerouted, including the 5W Green Express, the 10E Gold/Gold Hopper, the 12W/120W Teal and the 22S/220S Illini.
The stops at Goodwin & Gregory, Gregory & Dorner and Plant Sciences Lab, East Side, were closed to the 12W Teal.
The new routes are designed so that buses avoid traveling northbound on Goodwin Avenue, where the water main break occurred. The weather affected the leak’s repair.
“At least initially, the timing was good because the project happened during the UI Fall Break,” Rank wrote in the email. “However, unfortunately, the project extended beyond the original estimate, and the weather has gotten worse. That has affected their ability to put asphalt down to finish the project.”

Rank wrote that MTD initially planned to use a temporary lane to keep the lines running normally, but limited space forced them to continue to reroute the lines. Work on the water main will continue when temperatures reach upwards of 40 degrees, which may happen on Wednesday.
Until then, the four lines will continue to operate on the new routes. Those interested can access the full list of reroutes here.
