The Urbana City Council met last Monday to hold its weekly meeting, which focused on the passage of multiple resolutions and ordinances, as well as a discussion on an alternative response task force.
The meeting began with the approval of minutes from a previous meeting, followed by a review of the council’s consent agenda.
A resolution of support for an Illinois Community Development Block Grant was approved and moved to the regular agenda. The grants from the state are aimed at “assisting Illinois communities that do not receive a Department of Housing and Urban Development direct entitlement allocation with meeting their greatest economic and community development needs,” according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
A resolution approving a professional energy consulting services agreement with Good Energy was also moved to the regular agenda. Another resolution, which authorizes a service agreement with the lowest responsible bidder for an electrical supply for residential and small commercial retail customers, was moved as well. These resolutions will be voted on at a later date.
A resolution approving an interpretive sign adjacent to 120 W. Main Street and a resolution requiring stop signs at the intersection of Melissa Lane at Marc Trail were also both moved to the regular agenda.

Additionally, an ordinance prohibiting parking and allowing for towing vehicles within the cul-de-sac on Gregory Street was moved to the regular agenda to be voted on at another date.
The last resolution moved to the regular agenda was one authorizing the execution of an intergovernmental cost-sharing agreement for an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency-sponsored household hazardous waste collection event. This waste collection event would last one day.
As a part of the new business, a resolution authorizing an intergovernmental agreement with the Village of Savoy for the temporary usage of an aerial platform ladder truck was passed.
The meeting also included a mayoral appointment to Boards and Commissions. In addition, Gerald D. Frye was appointed to the Human Relations Commission.
The meeting ended with a discussion on an alternative response task force. The task force will be implemented instead of a proposed increase in police funding requested by Larry Boone, the chief of Urbana Police, which was rejected by the city council.
