The Urbana City Council held its weekly meeting on Monday, focusing on the Sustaining Urbana Neighborhoods grant program and two ordinances.
The meeting began with council input and communications, followed by a staff report on the proposed environmental grant program.
The goal behind establishing the SUN program is to create a grant program for community environmental projects. The program will provide funding for community-based activities that aim to support climate resiliency and the city’s sustainability goals.
These goals involve promoting healthy and sustainable community living, fostering creativity and collaboration to enhance climate resiliency and including young people in the process of creating climate-related policies and actions.
$100,000 in grant funding is available, and nonprofit organizations and individuals or community groups with a nonprofit sponsor can apply for the grant. The application period for the grant is from Sep. 1 to Nov. 1 of this year.

A session of public input followed by the discussion of two ordinances came after the presentation of the SUN grant program. The first ordinance authorized a landfill solar lease agreement, and the second ordinance proposed amending the Urbana Zoning Ordinance by replacing B-3U with CMU zoning district, as well as an update of development regulations.
Both ordinances were moved to the council consent agenda and the meeting concluded with council input.
