The Champaign Police Department received the highest level of accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program on Wednesday.
ILEAP bases their accreditations on a number of factors such as the department’s level of professionalism and the methods used to provide services to the community. This level of accreditation also allows departments to hold themselves more accountable and reduce liability and risk exposure.
CPD was the second department in Illinois to be assessed by the accreditation program and is also one of 64 departments to achieve the tier II accreditation out of 1,200 departments in the state.
“I am proud of the efforts of our officers and professional staff, and thankful to our community leaders for providing us with the resources and direction to not just meet standards, but to exceed them,” Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler said in a press release.
The department attributes the honor to months of effort from its Administrative Division, which culminated in an on-site assessment of the agency in April 2024.
