Power went out at several dorms, apartment complexes and stores around campus at approximately 5:25 p.m. Sunday night.
There were 14 reported outages, according to the electric service company Ameren, leaving 1,597 customers without service.
Update: 6:20 p.m.
The outage affected wifi, elevators, light fixtures, refrigerators and other objects or things requiring electricity according to Champaign Police dispatch and student reports on Reddit.com.
According to Ameren, the outage was caused by a wire problem and is expected to be resolved by 8:15 p.m.

“The cause appears to be a downed electrical wire. Crews have been dispatched to the area and are working to address the issue,” said an Ameren representative via email.
Update: 7:46 p.m.
Lights began turning on throughout Campustown at approximately 7:46 p.m.
Seven minutes later, a media representative from Ameren, the electrical company whose power grid originally went down, stated that the issue was resolved
“Power has been restored to all customers,” the media representative said.
The origin of the outage was not specified but video evidence suggests an above-ground power line broke near the electrical substation on South Oak Street.
