On Friday, the City of Champaign published a general press release outlining how it plans to address inclement weather forecasts and snow accumulation over the next two days.
Earlier this week, the National Weather Service issued a major winter storm warning, predicting heavy snow between midnight tonight and noon Monday.
The press release said that “snow may be preceded by sleet or freezing rain,” along with “gusty winds.”
Current forecasts predict snow accumulation of 2-4 inches, followed by a temperature drop. This means “snow may remain on the ground for a longer period than we see on average.”
According to the press release, the Public Works Department plans to act per Champaign’s Snow and Ice Control Plan.

This includes the use of anti-icing chemicals, snow and ice response on primary routes before the storm, as well as immediate snow and ice removal on primary routes within 12 hours of the end of the storm.
“Public Works crews will report for duty Sunday morning,” said Cory Conrad, Champaign’s Public Works operations manager.
Conrad also said this will be followed by “around the clock operations until the snow and ice control plan actions are completed.”
The City encourages residents to stay safe at home and keep roads clear for Public Works crews.
For Champaign residents who have to travel, the City is urging them to “use appropriate precautions when driving … allow extra time to reach your destination, and be cautious around snowplows.”
The City also recommended that motorists use alternative off-street parking options to “expedite plowing efforts.”
