“Courage To Remember,” an international traveling Holocaust exhibit, is currently on display at the Market Place Shopping Center in Champaign. Admission to the exhibit is free of charge and will run until Nov. 1.
Organized by the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation’s Holocaust Education Center, the exhibit will be open Monday to Friday from noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at the shopping center’s main court.
Flowing in chronological order, the exhibit depicts events of the Holocaust using first-person accounts, historical photos and maps. The collection educates the viewer on Nazi Germany’s persecution and extermination of European Jews from 1933–45.
The Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance put together the traveling exhibit, stating its goal to “inspire young and old alike to explore history, combat bigotry, and fight for injustice.”
Brian Kahn, longtime member and previous chair of the HEC, sponsors the exhibit. Kahn wrote in a press release that “We are very excited that Marketplace Shopping Center is hosting this exhibit.”

The exhibit has traveled to over 50 countries and has had more than 20 million visitors.
Holocaust survivor William Gingold brought the exhibit to the C-U area. Kahn shared that “it is an excellent educational tool for teaching about the Holocaust.”
School and community groups interested in viewing the exhibit with a volunteer guide may contact the HEC to see its availability outside of its listed hours.
“It is a powerful exhibit and incredibly well done,” said Rebecca Lawson, longtime member and previous chair of the HEC. “Getting to a major Holocaust museum is not easy for most people in our area, and this exhibit will give people a similar experience on a smaller scale without having to travel very far.”
