The City of Champaign is offering free parking in its Hill Street Parking Deck during the holidays. The initiative began Monday and will continue through Dec. 31. Drivers who stay longer than two hours will automatically receive a two-hour discount on their parking fee.
In a press release, city officials wrote that the goal is to encourage residents and visitors to shop and eat in downtown Champaign during the holiday season. Visitors do not need to show receipts or proof of purchase to receive the discount.
The press release reminded patrons to check business hours in advance, as some restaurants and shops may adjust schedules or capacity during the season. Parking in the deck and at downtown meters remains free on city holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Hill Street Parking Deck sits at the corner of Hill and Randolph Streets and offers more than 300 visitor spaces. Additional details are available on the city’s website.
On Nov. 25, The Daily Illini reported that Champaign is considering its first parking meter rate increase in more than 15 years. Meters currently range from 25 cents to $1 downtown and 75 cents to $1 in the University District.
