Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District and Bike at Illinois will hold the 14th annual Champaign County Bike to Work Day on Wednesday from 7-10 a.m. The 17th annual Light the Night free bike light giveaway will also occur Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
The University has eight welcome stations for Bike to Work Day, consisting of snacks, drinks, bicycling information and Bike Month 2024 t-shirts for cyclists. The University’s Institute of Sustainability, Energy and Environment welcome station will also return this year.
There are eight other welcome stations across the greater Champaign-Urbana area, Savoy, Mahomet, St. Joseph and Rantoul. All welcome station locations can be viewed here.
For Light the Night, participants can get free lights installed on their bikes. There are three locations on the University’s campus where the giveaway occurs: Alma Mater, Hallene Gateway and the Ikenberry Commons Quad. Attendees are required to bring their bikes to receive lights.
This event is organized due to a lack of awareness of the Illinois state law surrounding biking on the road.

According to Illinois bicycle laws, a bicycle must have a front light and rear red reflector or light at night. However, bicycles are not required to have light sets sold alongside them.
Bicyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the event. Pre-registration can be completed on the C-U Bike Month site. Details for other events can be found on the C-U Bike Month calendar.
Rain dates are scheduled on Sept. 20 for Bike to Work Day and Sept. 24 for Light the Night.
