The Daily Illini COVID-19 updates for April 30: Modified stay-at-home order begins Friday

By Ethan Simmons, News Editor

Illinois’ modified stay-at-home order takes effect Friday. Everyone above 2 years old must wear a mask in public if they can’t maintain a 6-foot social distance from others.

Thursday’s statewide additions of 2,563 new coronavirus cases and 141 new deaths were both the second-highest daily totals during the pandemic.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District announced 11 more cases of the coronavirus in Champaign County on Thursday, pushing the countywide total to 135 cases.

Of the 135 cases, 40 are active, 89 have recovered and six have died. Six people with active cases are currently hospitalized. Fewer than 5% of Champaign County’s 3,128 tests have proved positive.

County health officials recommend anyone with symptoms — fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, fatigue and loss of taste or smell — to get tested.
