The Daily Illini COVID-19 updates for May 5: Rantoul outbreak infects 47, Pritzker outlines Illinois reopening

By Ethan Simmons, News Editor

With Illinois officials announcing 176 new deaths from COVID-19, Tuesday was the state’s deadliest day from the pandemic thus far.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker unveiled his five-phase plan for reopening Illinois. The last stage — a full reopening — will not occur without a “vaccine or highly effective treatment.”

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District announced 25 more cases of the coronavirus in Champaign County on Tuesday, pushing the countywide total to 208 cases.

CUPHD attributed 15 of the 25 new cases to a recent outbreak at Rantoul Foods, a hog processing plant. The Rantoul outbreak has infected 47 people as of Tuesday.

Of Champaign County’s 208 cases, 89 are active, 113 have recovered and six have died. Five people with active cases are currently hospitalized. Fewer than 5% of Champaign County’s 4,237 tests have proved positive.
