University Housing’s contract portal for incoming freshmen has closed for self-assignment, according to a Housing bulletin Friday at 1:30 p.m.
The bulletin, distributed through email and a popup in the housing portal, reminds students that “all first-year students are guaranteed a space and will receive an assignment.”
Although the bulletin clarified that University Housing is not completely out of rooms, the self-assignment portal where students choose their placements is currently inaccessible.
“The amount of space remaining is so limited, it would be difficult for you to complete your own self-assignment at this time,” read the Housing bulletin. “University Housing is not out of space.”
In Fall 2024, the University faced a housing crisis and has since come up with policy changes to prevent similar problems from happening again. These included limiting the numbers of upperclassmen in dorms and changing the priority contract deadline to May 8.

“As more space becomes available, the Housing Information Office will provide room assignments,” continued the bulletin. “For those who were not able to pick a room, assignments will be sent on a rolling basis until August 6, 2025.”
The announcement also urged students to contract with Private Certified Housing for a room placement that could be secured “right away,” reminding them to cancel their University Housing contract if they chose to make the switch.
The Daily Illini reached out to University Housing for comment but has not yet received a response.
