The Central Black Student Union and other supporters stood in front of Alma Mater Thursday night with candles and photos of individuals lost to violence in honor of Domestic Violence Remembrance Month.
“We are participating in our annual remembrance walk where we commemorate the lives lost to gun violence, domestic violence,” said Malika Sampson, president of CBSU and senior in Social Work. “We just commemorate them and bring all the Black students together on campus and try to create a safe space so everybody feels like they’re not alone.”
Members and supporters of CBSU gave speeches and held moments of silence to show respect for those who have lost their lives or have lived through similar experiences.
“Weʼre not the majority on campus, but I feel like we have just as loud as a voice — and the acknowledgment and continued support of that would feel good,” said Michael Oyeniyi, treasurer of Kappa Alpha Psi and senior in Business.
Attendees of the Remembrance Walk wore ribbon pins as a sign of solidarity for women, in this case paying special attention to Black women.

“We just want to give them light and show them that we are here to support them and their families,” said Trinity Nelson, vice president of CBSU and junior in LAS.
