Approximately seven-thousand freshmen were officially welcomed to the University of Illinois Monday afternoon at Assembly Hall, 1800 S. First Street.

Paul Kwiat, physics and electrical and computer engineering professor, was the key-note speaker. Throughout the ceremony he conducted several physics demonstrations to entertain the crowd.

Following the convocation, the Class of 2010 walked to Memorial Stadium for the Illinois Sights and Sounds show.
