Art exhibit at Native American House vandalized again
April 7, 2009
Three signs that were displayed in the “Beyond the Chief” exhibit outside Native American House and the American Indian Studies buildings were vandalized sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday afternoon, said a press release.
“I find it distressing that this art exhibit which is meant to educate everyone on campus about the indigenous history of Illinois has been repeatedly targeted in this destructive way,” said Robert Warrior, director of of Native American House and American Indian Studies, in the press release.
The signs damaged were the ones naming the Meskwaki, Sac and Potawatomi. The signs are bent and permanently damaged.
These are only the most recent signs to be damaged. A sign featuring the Peoria tribe was damaged on or about March 15.
The damages are valued at $10,000 for the ruined signs. No arrests or citations have been made for the damages at press time.
