Two arrested for murder of Vicente Mundo
February 3, 2015
Two suspects have been arrested for University student Vicente Mundo’s murder and are expected to be charged in court later this afternoon.
Daniel Gonzalez, 21 of Cicero, and Reginald Scott, 21 of Champaign, were arrested on various charges, including first degree murder, State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said at a press conference.
Champaign County Sheriff Dan Walsh said Mundo’s murder was part of a pre-planned armed robbery, involving “relatively small amounts of marijuana and cash.” Police said that Mundo is believed to have known the suspects for a few years. Walsh declined to say whether Mundo was selling marijuana to the Gonzalez and Scott “because I don’t want to.”
Mundo’s car was recovered in Champaign Monday night. The handgun that is believed to be the murder weapon was recovered by officers this morning.
The murder took place on the night of Jan. 25 — the last night Mundo was seen — in the parking garage of Mundo’s apartment complex. Mundo entered Gonzalez’s vehicle and talked to the suspects. After some time, the suspects shot and killed Mundo in the vehicle and drove to dispose of the body in the country near Tolono, where it was discovered on Saturday morning. Mundo, junior in LAS, was reported missing to the University of Illinois Police Department on Jan. 27.

Police agencies do not believe there is any connection between Mundo’s murder and the disappearance of Cristian Zamora, a recent graduate from the University. Zamora has been missing since Dec. 31.
Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb said the investigation for Zamora is ongoing. The police have searched Crystal Lake Park, near where Zamora was last seen. Cobb said there haven’t been many new leads in the case.
