"Sister, Sister" star Tia Mowry to speak on campus Thursday

“Sister, Sister” star Tia Mowry, speaking on campus Thursday

Tia Mowry will be speaking at the Illini Union Thursday, March 31.JT The “Sister, Sister” star will engage in a Q&A moderated by Isabel Kadiri, the vice president of programs for the Illini Union Board, and Tekita Bankhead, the assistant director of the Bruce D. Nesbitt African-American Cultural Center.JT

Attendees are encouraged to ask questions for Mowry before the event on the Facebook group event. The moderators will present certain student questions during Q&A.

While Mowry will not focus on one specific topic, her childhood connection to many students makes her appealing, Kadiri said.

“Once thing that is really cool about Tia is that she always remains pretty relevant,” Kadiri said. “I think she’s someone that a lot of us grew up watching when we were younger.”

The event is at 7 p.m. in the Illini Rooms of the Illini Union, which are located on the West side of the building, and is free and open to the public.JT

Since being on Disney Channel, Mowry continued acting in “The Game” on The CW. She, along with identical twin sister Tamera Mowry-Housley, produced and starred in a reality show, “Tia & Tamera”, for three seasons on the STYLE network.

Tia authored “Oh, Baby!: Pregnancy Tales and Advice from One Hot Mama to Another”, and a young adult series “Twintuition” with Tamera.JT

She’s also done two seasons of “Tia Mowry at Home” on the Cooking ChannelJT, as well as TV Land’s Instant Mom.JT She will also appear as a recurring character on both ABC’s “Mistresses” and on Fox’s “Rosewood.”JT

When bringing guest lecturers to campus, Kadiri focuses on finding speakers relevant to all students on campus. In addition to her cooking show, Mowry is a vegan and animal rights activist.JT

“She’d be great to speak up about empowerment. I know that’s something she’s very interested in,” Kadiri said.

Mowry took a break from acting and attended Pepperdine University and received a bachelor degree in psychology.JT
