After months of speculation, it has finally been confirmed that Jarling’s Custard Cup in Champaign will remain open under a new, star-studded ownership group.
Since the summer season ended, the Jarlings have been quiet about the future of the ice cream shop — until now. The family finally announced last weekend that a buyer group had been found, filled with faithful Illini that locals will certainly recognize.
The new owners include Ron Turner, former Illinois football coach, and Bruce Weber, former Illinois basketball coach. The group is led by Tom Siegel, former Illini basketball and baseball player, and also includes former Illinois football players Tony Pashos and Kurt Kittner.
Also included in the new ownership is the Sholem family of Champaign, former Illini athletes and other individuals.
The Jarling family, which has operated the establishment since 1983, said in March 2015 that it was seeking buyers for the highly successful business after the summer. The Jarlings changed their minds, though, and closed the business by the end of the month, only to reopen later with fewer hours for the rest of the summer.

For customers, not much is going to be changing at the famous ice cream parlor. The new ownership group plans to keep the famous menu untouched, and the Jarling family will be staying on briefly to facilitate a smooth transition.
