The Campustown Target Corporation, after more than a year in development, will have its grand opening on Sunday.

Located at 706-708 S. Sixth St., Target will occupy the first two floors of The Dean, the 17-floor, high-rise apartment complex in the heart of campus.

The store will take up around 17,000 square feet, according to the corporation’s upcoming locations web page.

It’ll be the second Target built in Champaign, after the one at 2102 N. Prospect Ave.

A soft opening for the new store occurred on Tuesday, though the Jimmy John’s below the store has been open all semester.

“We see an opportunity to serve more guests in the Champaign-Urbana community, and as we are opening these doors across the country, one of our priority areas is opening stores on or near collewge campuses,” said  spokeswoman Jacqueline Debuse in April. “We know that there is a need we can fill. We can bring an easy convenient shopping experience to those communities and that is what we intend to do with this store.”

The new Target store occupies land where the Firehaus and The Clybourne bars, Korean restaurant Woori Jib, HomeTown Pantry, The Loft, Campus Ink and another Jimmy John’s used to be.
