Editorial: To our readers
November 8, 2004
On Friday, Nov. 5, The Daily Illini published a comic that incorrectly mocked Jewish stereotypes. The editors realize the error in the decision to print this strip of Matt Vroom’s ‘i hate pam’ comic.
As a student newspaper, The Daily Illini is held to a high level of criticism and scrutiny – and rightfully so. We are students, publishing a newspaper read primarily by other students. It is our duty, responsibility and privilege to report truthfully, accurately and fairly, to the best of our ability.
On Friday, we failed to do so.
We cannot prevent artists from illustrating offensive or controversial opinions. However, we can choose whether or not that particular opinion should be voiced in the pages of the newspaper.
We realize that journalists play an influential role in society and on campus. With that influence comes responsibility and obligation.

Although the artist did not intend for the comic to degrade Jewish people or Judaism, we understand that the content was offensive to those concerned.
With the publication of satire and parody, the editors also run the risk of relaying information that will be interpreted by many as hateful. In this case, Vroom’s comic was anti-Semitic in nature.
The editors are aware of and regretful of the comic’s message.
We have disciplined the artist involved.
We have disciplined the editor involved.
Vroom’s comic ‘i hate pam’ will not appear on the comics page for a period of at least four weeks from the date of the comic’s publication.
The editorial staff will exercise measures to ensure that similar mistakes are not made in the future.
The opinion represented in Vroom’s comic does not represent the opinion of The Daily Illini.
It is with regret and disappointment that we acknowledge the presentation of a limited point of view to such an unlimited audience.
We accept – and welcome – your criticism and hope that you will continue to provide us with feedback. Letters for publication can be sent to [email protected], or 57 E. Green St., Champaign, 61820.
