Column: All about the money

When Amber Frey’s book came out I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she just wanted to remind everyone that “IT WASN’T AN AFFAIR! I DIDN’T KNOW HE WAS MARRIED!” Amber admits in the book that she had sex with Scott Peterson on their first date and that she left her child alone with Scott after only a couple dates – I have a whole slew of new reasons to judge her now. Thanks Amber, I was pretty sick of the old ones.
Scott Peterson’s sister Anne Bird has come out with her new tell-all book, aptly named Blood Brother, and for those of you who don’t get the double-entendre, Scott Peterson is Anne’s biological brother and a murderer. I hate to disappoint, but the rest of the book isn’t as clever. Anne is now stating she thinks Scott Peterson is guilty. What a scoop!
To promote her book, Anne has hit the talk show circuit. Last week, both Oprah and Matt Lauer of NBC’s Dateline, interviewed her. Once you see her cow eyes (not to mention other bovine features), it isn’t as hard to believe that she was slow in coming to the conclusion that her brother is guilty of murder. She falls under the category “Big and Dumb” … and before I get letters, I didn’t say all fat people fall into this category, just the dumb ones.
Anne Bird said in the Dateline interview that she did believe her brother was innocent. She thought that Scott’s flirting with her attractive babysitter was maybe a little inappropriate. When the news about his affair with Amber Frey broke, she confronted him, and he said that Laci knew about it and was okay with it. Anne knew he was lying about that, but she still thought he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his pregnant wife. Then, there was the night Scott was watching the news coverage about Laci’s disappearance, shook his head and said, “They’re looking in the wrong places,” yet Anne remained by his side.
It wasn’t until long after Scott was in jail that she tallied all the lies and odd behaviors Scott displayed and decided her brother was guilty. She did not want to testify against him in court, however, because she was afraid of being excommunicated from the Peterson family. She was not asked to testify, and in the Dateline interview Anne said, “I was thrilled. I did not know how I could’ve been able to stand there and, you know, say all of these hideous things that he did.” I guess it is a lot easier to say them on national TV while promoting the book that also says them.

Oprah, who by the way looked like she wanted to shake Anne for being such a dumb ass, asked her if she realized that Jackie Peterson is probably never going to speak to her again. Anne, who earlier in the broadcast revealed that her mom had called Laci’s mother, Sharon Rocha, “evil” for accusing Scott, agreed that her mom probably won’t be calling her anytime soon.
I am completely disgusted by Anne Bird’s decision to profit from her brother’s crime. It is one thing to have not wanted to testify against your brother although you thought he was guilty. What if he was found innocent? Thanksgiving and Christmas would be somewhat uncomfortable. But then to write a book (and I’m using the word “write” loosely here) for no other purpose than to make money is just sick.
For some reason I am less disgusted with Jackie Peterson’s delusional belief that her son is innocent. When asked to appear on Oprah with Anne, she declined but said she would be happy to be a guest on a show about people who are falsely accused. At least she doesn’t want any fame and money for raising a sociopath. Not yet anyway.
