LETTER: Funding, volunteers needed for seniors

Seniors are one of the fastest growing segments of the population in our community, with the highest rate of growth seen in those 85 and older. Services allowing seniors to live in their own home for as long as possible are in high demand, and that demand will only continue to grow. Preventing or delaying a move to a nursing home is the desire of most seniors and their families, and it is also the most cost effective way for us as a community to care for our parents, grandparents and elderly friends.

The Family Service Senior Resource Center, with the support of the United Way of Champaign County, provides home delivered meals, transportation, reassurance calls, help with house work and personal care, assistance to navigate the complex bureaucracy of government benefits, protection for victims of elder abuse, and many other services to Champaign County seniors and their families. While government funding is important to our ability to provide these programs, it has never covered the full cost of service and that gap grows every year. The only way to insure that these services are available for our senior family members now and in the future is with community support, both financial and through volunteerism.

We need your help to secure the independence and dignity of our seniors. Invest in our community through a gift to the United Way of Champaign County. Together, we can get results that no one can accomplish alone.
