It is not surprising that campus organizations continue to sponsor events that draw on racist stereotypes. Of course, the Trustees and the University Administration set the tone from the top. It is unlikely that anything will be able to fully counter the widespread effects of supporting a racist mascot. The “Tequilas and Tacos” example is but one clear consequence of continuing the Chief Illiniwek tradition.
