LETTER: Students not racists

Could someone please tell me why graduate student Brian Montes and employee Al Kagan (Letters to the Editor Oct. 18) are still at the University of Illinois? If your expectation of all U of I students is racist behavior, why associate yourselves with all of us evil racists by being here?

The actions of a select few Tri-Deltas and ZBTs are not representative of their whole houses or the Greek system and especially not the University as a whole. To make an assumption about a large group based on a small, non-representative group is called prejudice.

Obviously these two people have not been to or have not been paying attention at football and volleyball games. We are not shouting racial slurs or mocking the Chief as he marches out. We are attentive and respectful of the Chief. Fans chant “Chieeeeef” out of excitement and pride, just like we chant “Bruuuuce” when Bruce Weber is on the basketball court. There is no mockery or condescension toward the Chief, just respect and pride.

Maybe Montes and Kagan were too consumed with their own prejudices to notice.
