LETTER: Jakobsson’s support for students is clear

Naomi Jakobsson has been a leader for University students. She has continuously fought for this University and the rights and needs of its students. The cost of textbooks is excessive. This year Naomi Jakobsson introduced legislation to help reduce the cost of textbooks by stopping unnecessary bundling practices and price gouging. Jakobsson was also able to pass a bill in the House that would protect student loan borrowers. In addition, she has been a voice of concern for the potential sale of ISAC loans.

Representative Jakobsson voted for a budget that will provide more financial aid to student nurses, forensic science students, children of veterans, need-based grants and the University of Illinois. As a graduate of our school and as state representative, she was able to secure a $12.1 million increase for the U of I’s operating budget. This includes a $500,000 grant for the undergraduate library digitalization. Jakobsson was also able to secure $48 million for new construction and renovation projects. This includes $3 million for Lincoln Hall.

Beyond helping students with education, she has helped residents in apartments. Last year, she introduced legislation to help residents living in apartments have easier access to recycling. The legislation provides incentives to landlords to provide on site recycling. Therefore, it is easier for leasers to recycle more garbage.

State Representative Naomi Jakobsson has been a progressive, independent leader who has been advocating for the University community and when it comes to her policies it is clear that she is listening to student’s concerns.
