Letter: Women affected most by violence
Nov 2, 2006
While it is important to offer differing opinions and other viewpoints, it is disappointing that David Nevers’ letter to the editor was published.
No matter how you slice the statistics, women are more often the victims of domestic violence and men are more often the perpetrators. While Richard Gelles, Murray Straus and Suzanne Steinmetz did important research on domestic violence, their information is often misused or misinterpreted. The researchers themselves questioned the validity of some of their findings.
That is not to suggest that male victims should be silenced or ignored. However, it isn’t necessary to dismiss the experiences of female victims in order for males to receive recognition. Nor is it necessary to blame “radical feminism” (which more accurately states “patriarchy bad”) for the lack of recognition of male victims. More important is the need to get help for and give voice to those who suffer from domestic violence and to begin examining the circumstances within our society that enable domestic violence.
