I write today a man with a heavy heart. I never thought I would say this, but unfortunately the day has come: it is my sad duty to inform the residents of the Champaign-Urbana area that there exists not a single Wendy’s restaurant in our respective towns. Yes, you read that right. Zero.
I don’t want to beat around the bush: Wendy’s led me to the University of Illinois. After my first meal here, I was smitten; I chose U of I soon after. At the time, this was a land of many Wendy’s, but some heartless thief has since ripped them from under us. Seeing them crumble, however, has inspired me to rise up.
Wendy’s boasts locations in countries such as Hungary, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. I refuse to believe residents in these countries are able to enjoy delicious menu items, such as the Spicy Chicken Sandwich and the new half-pound Jalape¤o Cheddar, while hardworking Americans in the Champaign-Urbana area are made to go hungry.
Don’t blame poor business. The University and Parkland refuel with new students every year. This means consistent customer flow for local businesses. Add on the 100,000+ residents of the area, and poor business is a non-factor just like Brett Favre the past three seasons.
We must city-fund a new Wendy’s, and let’s use the profits to support local charities and youth programs. Only those wishing to commit political suicide would shoot down this plan.

We must unite, Champaign-Urbana. Together, we can rebuild.
