LETTER: Sanctions will not resolve racism issues

In response to “Sorority, fraternity sanctioned in response to offensive party” (Nov. 30), while the University of Illinois has addressed the issue of the “Tacos and Tequila” party by imposing sanctions on Tri Delta and Zeta Beta Tau, they are not addressing the more pressing issue of racism and discrimination on this campus.

While the University of Illinois has made an attempt to punish an issue of this party, they are not going after the right issue. They are sanctioning Tri Delta and ZBT for violating the Student Code regarding drinking. If this was the real reason for the protesting and many meetings regarding this party, then we would have meetings everyday for the violation of the Student Code, because underage drinking happens all the time here.

The main and most important issue with this party is the racial and discriminatory actions that took place during the party. The actions of pretending to be illegal aliens, pretending to be pregnant and wearing sombreros are direct messages of racism directed at the Hispanic community on this campus.

The University needs to address the real issue; otherwise, parties like these will continue to occur until they are directly sanctioned for their acts of racism and discrimination.
