LETTER: Checking the numbers

After reading the opinion piece entitled “More effective solutions” from the Dec. 4 edition of the Daily Illini, I was appalled by the ridiculousness behind such a factually incorrect argument. Clearly, the author does not know the reality of the situation in Palestine. If we take a look at the facts behind the current intifada, we will discover that 1,084 Israelis have died compared to 4,286 Palestinians. Furthermore, 4,170 Palestinian homes have been destroyed by Israelis, while zero Israeli homes have been destroyed by Palestinians. In addition, over forty Jewish-only settlements have been illegally built inside of Palestine, yet no Palestinians settlements have been built inside of Israel.

With over sixty-five United Nations resolutions condemning Israel, the question must now be asked: who is the real terrorist? When a government and its people support terrorizing the over one million people living in Gaza, the most densely-populated area of the planet, it is quite obvious that Israeli terrorism is a very serious problem.
