LETTER: New liquor law poses safety threat

Illinois legislators are considering SB 948, which will legalize “bottle service” – selling an entire bottle of distilled spirits (hard liquor) to a table or group of 2 or more people. This could result in increased drinking and driving, alcohol abuse, violence, crime and underage drinking.

SB 948 encourages binge drinking and overconsumption of alcohol.

The U. S. Dietary Guideline on Alcohol states, “Those who choose to drink alcoholic beverages should do so sensibly and in moderation-defined as the consumption of up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.” One drink equals 12 oz. of beer or a wine cooler, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz. of distilled spirits. There are 17 drinks in a Fifth of distilled spirits, 21 drinks in a quart bottle, and 22 drinks in one liter.

Who will be watching to make sure that no one under the age of 21 consumes alcohol from the bottle of distilled spirits that is brought to the table?

The costs of alcohol are greater than the amount of revenue. For every dollar of alcohol revenue in the U. S., the cost to American society is $8.10.

This legislation applies to liquor licenses statewide, not just to a few high-end clubs in Chicago. Public health and safety will be jeopardized by legalizing “bottle service”. Legislators will vote on this bill next week. Call your State Representative (217-782-2000) to voice concerns about SB 948.
