Bears fans need to relax

Sports fans are weird.
After the Bears’ Week One loss to the Bills, there was panic in Chicago.
When an injured Bears team pulled out a major upset on the road against the 49ers in a gutsy game, Jay Cutler was the hero QB who withstood a huge tackle to the chest, and rallied his team back to victory.
In Week Three, the Bears handled the Jets, and it was their defense that took center stage. It was a happy time in Chicago and fans started to believe that this was a team that could do some damage in the NFC North.

Week Four came around and it was time for the Bears to take on the Packers for the first time this season. Everything seemed to be in the Bears’ favor. The Packers had been struggling; the Bears had come off a couple of nice wins.
There was one problem though: Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers had no problem carving up the Bears defense, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns. Many of those touchdowns were coming off Jay Cutler interceptions. The Bears were blown out 38-17, and all of a sudden … PANIC.
I truly wonder how long it’s going to take sports fans to realize that it gets pretty silly and tiresome to get too up or down week-to-week in the NFL.
Yes, there are only 16 games, and every game is important, but fans needs to chill out.
Don’t they realize that each of Cutler’s five seasons in Chicago have been hyped as “this is the year?” Every year we hear about how Cutler is ready to take the next step as an NFL quarterback and enter into the elites.
For goodness sakes Chicago Bears fans, we know who he is!
Let me say that again. We know exactly who Jay Cutler is, and what his strengths and weaknesses are.
He’s 31 years old. I’m not saying he’s old, but I am saying that it is too old to be expecting any major changes or improvements in his game. We’re not talking about a 25-year-old QB who is still figuring it out.
Cutler has an outstanding arm, makes some eye-popping throws and can actually scramble his way out of pressure from time to time.
Cutler also makes the same poor decisions that he’s made his entire career. If he hasn’t made those adjustments nine years into his career, he never will.
Despite his problems, I believe that the Bears can go far in the playoffs.
The Packer game showed that the Bears’ defense is still not close to where it needs to be.
Its offense, however, can be explosive any given Sunday.
All I ask from Bears fans is that we all take a step back and realize what the team has on the field.
Let’s stop pretending they are any better, or worse than they are.
Some weeks Jay Cutler will look brilliant, and the defense will play just good enough to win. There will be other games where Cutler looks lost, and the defense couldn’t even stop me.
Bears fans, please take a deep breath and accept the fact that the Bears are neither good, nor bad, but fine. The Bears are just fine.
