Editorial | Vote ‘Yes’ to Media Fee
March 5, 2020
A tall coffee from Starbucks costs $1.85. Here at Illini Media Company, we are asking just the same from you: $1.85 a semester to help us continue to serve the University.
The Illini Media Company consists of The Daily Illini, WPGU 107.1 FM and Illio Yearbook. When you want to stay up to date with news about what’s happening on and around campus, The Daily Illini is there. When you want to relax, listen to some good music and fun banter, you turn on WPGU 107.1 FM, and you rely on Illio to capture the memories of your college career.
Each entity of Illini Media Company serves the University community in a different way.
Not only does Illini Media Company offer free content to the community in print, online and the radio, but it also serves as an educational hub. Over 400 students work at Illini Media Company throughout the year, where students get professional experience, something they cannot get inside the classroom.
Along with the experience, most jobs require examples of work in a professional setting, and students are able to craft a portfolio while they are working at Illini Media Company. In a time where journalism is changing, it has never been more important to train future journalists.

Illini Media Company is not just for Media students. Here, we have students from all different majors. Whether you’re a journalism student, an Engineering student, a Business student or anything in between, there’s a place for you at Illini Media Company.
We work here because we love what we do. We’re able to keep the community up to date with important events; there’s something for everyone here. Whether you want to stay informed with news, sports or what an RSO is doing on campus, we have you covered.
We are asking students to vote in favor of extending the Media Fee for another four years. Currently, you are paying the $1.85 as part of your tuition fees. We ask you vote online today at vote.illinois.edu for students to continue to do so. The polls close at midnight, so make sure to get your vote in before then.
By voting ‘yes’ to the Media Fee, you are voting yes to every RSO we cover, every football game and basketball game we send reporters to, every song you hear on WPGU and you’re even saying yes to the senior picture your mom will make you take. By voting ‘yes,’ you are voting ‘yes’ to 150 years of Illini Media history.
Think about how much you spend every semester. The same price as a tall coffee from Starbucks, $1.85 is a negligible part of this. So, please, vote ‘yes’ to the Media Fee, and help to save your campus media.
