Letter: Diversity not skin deep
Dec 14, 2004
Chuck Prochaska’s column “Your Starting Lineup” will add to his growing treasure trove of worthless, whiny and ultimately substance-devoid articles. Chuck, President Bush’s record of nominating qualified minorities to key cabinet roles is impressive. However, one can still criticize some of President Bush’s public policies that lack diversity because they affect a much larger audience than his cabinet.
There are people that feel as though diversity is not necessarily always a skin color or ethnicity but can also include a difference in viewpoint. Nominating your close friends to cabinet positions leads some to conclude that President Bush would rather not have strong differing viewpoints. For instance, there has been speculation of tension between Colin Powell and other members of the cabinet over the Iraq war. Many feel that Powell’s stance on the Iraq war left him alienated and ultimately ignored.
Only time will tell if Bush will have a “devastating” effect on the Democratic Party. My guess is that as long as Bush keeps nominating his rich friends who hold very similar ideologies as him, most people won’t view him as the most diverse man on the planet.
It’s shocking to hear Chuck Prochaska actually tout diversity as “good for all of us.” Prochaska, in response to a Kerry supporter who encouraged “honoring diversity,” wrote in response on 11/11/04 “keep the freak show on Fifth Avenue…We’ll come and snap pictures.”
Chuck, you have no credibility. You cannot write garbage such as this in mid-November and then expect everyone to forget a month later. Since you have fallen in love with President Bush, maybe you should take a page from his playbook for your own attempt at a career: Be consistent, even if you’re wrong.
