Former Illinois basketball player Jerrance Howard recently accepted a position with the Texas A&M; men’s basketball team as an athletic assistant.

Texas A&M; head coach Billy Gillispie confirmed that Howard will likely be joining his staff in the next few days. Gillispie noted that some details need completion before Howard officially becomes a member of the Aggies staff.

“It is not official until he gets here and signs a contract,” Gillispie said.

By Monday, Howard’s paper work should be completed, Gillispie said.

“I don’t foresee any problems,” he said.

Gillispie served as assistant basketball coach at Illinois from 2000 until 2002 on Bill Self’s staff. Howard played guard for the Illini from 1999 until 2004.

Texas A&M; hired Gillispie as their head basketball coach in March 2004 after he coached the University of Texas-El Paso to the NCAA tournament in 2004.
