Q & A with Jason Davis
September 29, 2004
Personally playing a pretty good game Saturday, but then on the flip side the team not pulling off the win, how does that put your personal success into perspective?
“You have to put personal success on the back burner because the main purpose is to get the W for the team, for the University. Me having a good day or any of the other backs on the O-line having a good day, it’s not meaningless, but it doesn’t hold up to having a victory for the team.”
Do you expect to see more of the ball after having a game like that?
“All week in practice you prepare to get the ball, prepare to do whatever you have to do to help your team. I get the ball a lot in practice, and if there comes a time in the game when Coach Turner wants to get the ball to me he will. I’m a fullback, so I have to block first. That’s my first priority. If he decides he needs to get me the ball, I’ll do something with it.”
Who do you like blocking for better, E.B. Halsey or Pierre Thomas?

“It doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter if it’s E.B. or Pierre or Marcus Mason, whoever they have behind me is a capable back. At that given point in the game, I love to block for them, it’s no problem.”
Is there a particular NFL fullback who you most admire or model your game after?
“I most admire Larry Centers. He was in the NFL a lot when I was growing up. Other than that, Tony Richardson from Kansas City. I like their style, how they play. And definitely Carey Davis.
Following in Carey’s footsteps, what kind of lessons did you learn working with him?
“You’ve just got to show up every day for practice. You’re going to get bumps and bruises, but you have to show up every day prepared to play and just be happy to be on the team, happy to be at the University.”
You had two touchdowns Saturday against Purdue, one rushing and one receiving. Which of those do you prefer, rushing or receiving?
“It really doesn’t matter. Whatever situation Coach Turner puts me in I’m going to make the best of it, try to help this team. (We tried) to knock off the Boilermakers last week; this week we’ve got Wisconsin. So if he wants to throw it to me or he wants to give it to me, I’ll do what I have to do.”
Very politically correct answer.
“Yeah.”
You ran the 4×100 in high school. Do you think you could run down Pierre, E.B. or Marcus in the 40?
“I’m the fastest running back we’ve got. That’s not a politically correct answer; I’m the fastest running back we’ve got. I raced all of them in the summer and I beat everybody but E.B. – he had a groin injury. Whatever they say is false; I beat them all in the 40. Now if we go 60, 80 or 100 they’ll beat me, but 40-yard or 20-yard, I’m going to win.”
How big have the fans been for this team this year?
“They’ve been huge, coming off a 1-11 season and showing this kind of support. The Block-I comes to practice on Thursdays, that’s just the love they show. We’re going to go out and play for them first and foremost before we play for each other. We’re going to play for them every Saturday, and I just hope they keep supporting us, you know. Hopefully a lot of them can come up to Wisconsin and support us.”
