Club lacrosse hosts play day
October 22, 2004
Women’s club lacrosse will host three teams this Sunday at the Complex Fields at Lincoln and Florida Avenues.
The Illini play three games in their third pre-season event of the fall, including a rematch against the Chicago Women’s Lacrosse Club, who defeated Illinois at the Chicago LAX Fest Oct. 2.
“They’re a group of women from Chicago who graduated from different schools around the country and come together to play,” said senior attack player Jenny Lynch. “Playing them is a good test of our skills.”
Those skills are still rough in many cases, as some players on the team are new to the sport. But Lynch said the team is strong in other areas.
“We have a really quick team this year,” Lynch said. “We run a lot in practice and we’ve improved the pace of our game, which is good because endurance is essential in this sport.”

The Illini have won all but one game this fall, including a sudden-death overtime victory over Indiana last weekend.
“The general trend is that the Big Ten teams – for example, Michigan State is our biggest rival – those teams tend to be the toughest ones,” said senior center Lindsay Morgan, the club’s president. “The smaller schools don’t have as big a pool to pull players from.”
The Illini easily won their other two games Oct. 17, beating Dayton 12-4 and Taylor 16-0.
Regular season play is held second semester. The team begins practicing indoors in January, and moves outside as soon as weather permits.
“The pre-season is more important in terms of first seeing where we are compared to other teams, but also building camaraderie among players,” Morgan said.
Illinois plays the University of Chicago at 10 a.m., the Chicago Women’s Club at 1 p.m. and Wisconsin at 3 p.m.
