Street to be named for Henson

By Eric Chima

The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday to present former Illini basketball coach Lou Henson with street signs named in his honor.

Henson, the winningest coach in Illinois history, announced his retirement from New Mexico State Saturday morning due to health concerns. He will visit the University this weekend for the Illinois Basketball Centennial Celebration.

The council will vote next week to officially rename a section of First Street running near Assembly Hall after the coach.

The directive was not on the agenda for the meeting, but the council members felt it was important to get it through while Henson was at the school. Councilwoman Kathy Ennen stressed the importance of honoring the former coach while he was healthy.

“Mr. Henson is really the epitome of the qualities we’d like to see coming out of the city of Champaign and the University of Illinois,” Ennen said.
