‘Stros beat Cubs, move above .500

CHICAGO (AP) – Chris Burke went 4-for-4 with five runs scored to match the Astros’ team record and Andy Pettitte allowed five hits in seven strong innings Tuesday night, lifting surging Houston to a 9-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Pettitte (6-7) earned his first career victory against the Cubs, retiring 12 straight after he was struck by Juan Pierre’s line drive leading off the third inning. The veteran lefty did not give up another hit until Phil Nevin’s leadoff homer in the seventh.
Houston has won six of its last seven to move back above the .500 mark for the first time since May 30.
The Cubs, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, loaded the bases with one out in the eighth on three straight singles before Dan Wheeler struck out Nevin and got Matt Murton on a grounder to third.
Pierre’s liner appeared to hit Pettitte in the upper right leg or lower abdomen, the ball smacking him so hard it ricocheted to first baseman Lance Berkman.

Pettitte then threw some warmup pitches to make sure he was OK and stayed in the game.
