In the aftermath of Monday’s late-night car accident, Jamar Smith will miss the remainder of the 2006-07 basketball season, head coach Bruce Weber said in a formal statement released Friday morning.

“It has been mutually agreed upon between myself and Jamar Smith and his family, that he sit out the remainder of this season so that he can focus all of his attention on the physical, emotional, academic and other related issues he will face in the coming weeks,” Weber said.

Freshman center Brian Carlwell, who was a passenger in the vehicle with Smith, was released from Carle Foundation Hospital at 12:25 p.m. on Friday. Though he will sit out the remaining regular season games, Carlwell is expected to be in attendance for Sunday’s game against Northwestern. In his media teleconference on Friday, Weber said Illinois trainers hope Carlwell will return to the lineup in time for the Big Ten Tournament beginning on March 8.

Smith, a native of Peoria, Ill., has been plagued by ankle injuries for much of the season.

“As I said Wednesday, this is a very difficult time for Jamar,” Weber said. “Our coaches, players and program will continue to support him as he deals with this situation.”

Smith has been charged with improper lane usage, but other charges could be filed pending the results of an ongoing police investigation involving the accident. State’s attorney Julia Rietz said she has not received the official report on the accident from the campus police.

“We hope to receive the report early next week to review and make a decision on what, if any, additional charges will be filed,” Rietz said.

The state’s attorney’s office will be closed until Tuesday.
