March 2, 2007
The Illinois baseball has split its first two games of the Al Ogletree Classis in Edinburg, Texas, picking up its first victory of the season on Friday night before losing Saturday.
The Illini downed Sam Houston State 14-5 on Friday night to earn sophomore starting pitcher Scott Shaw his first win of the year. Shaw bounced back nicely after being pounded in his first start of the year, going five innings and giving up just two runs on four hits while striking out four batters.
Shaw’s performance on the mound was backed by senior catcher Lars Davis. Davis regained his form at the plate from last season by going 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI’s and three runs scored.
Junior second baseman Ryan Hasting also drove in two runs and scored two runs for the Illini, going 2-for-4 with two singles.
On Saturday night, however, the Illini were unable to keep sustain the momentum, falling 5-3 to host Texas Pan-American.
