Houseworth wins 1500 meters at EIU Classic

The Illinois men’s track and field team split up again this weekend.
Seniors Tramell Smith and Adrian Walker, junior Paul Johnson, and sophomore Lesiba Masheto traveled with head coach Wayne Angel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the 80th running of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The rest of the team traveled to Charleston, Ill., with assistant coach Wendel McRaven to compete in a cold climate at the Eastern Illinois University Big Blue Classic.
The group of four that competed in Austin finished in 13th place in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3:11.48 and 11th in the 1,600-meter sprint medley with a time of 3:24.11. Smith also ran the 800-meter run in 2:01.24, and Walker finished the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.82.
In the bitter cold in Charleston, senior Jon Houseworth was the highlight for the Illini, taking first place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:01.95 and seventh place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.23.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the Illini snagged the top four spots.
Freshman Robert Pykosz took first place with a 9:39.10, senior Maciej Sniegorski took second with a 9:45.10, freshman Tim Maier took third with a 9:47.40 and junior Matt Flaherty finished in fourth with a time of 9:53.80.
The Illini also performed well in the discus, with junior Travis Leonard taking second with a mark of 159’01.00 and junior Chad Gridley taking sixth with a mark of 152’11.00″.
