Ex-Cub Barrett suspended for 1 game, appeals
July 25, 2007
DENVER – San Diego’s Michael Barrett was suspended for one game and fined $1,500 Tuesday, two days after he was ejected from a game against Philadelphia.
Barrett asked the players’ union to appeal the penalty, meaning he cannot be punished until after a hearing and a decision.
Barrett and Padres manager Bud Black were ejected in the fifth inning of San Diego’s 9-0 loss after Barrett was called out on strikes by plate umpire Chris Guccione and then argued.
“I would like to get on the phone with MLB and share my case with them,” Barrett said before Tuesday’s game against Colorado. “If I can and they will listen without having to go through the appeal process, than I’d be happy about that.”
Barrett added, “I wasn’t real happy with the report that was filed by the umpire. If it was just one game and the report was fair, I probably wouldn’t debate or argue it.”

Barrett was acquired last month from the Cubs after a stormy stay in Chicago that included a fight with pitcher Carlos Zambrano.
“The way things have gone with my career I guess I expect a little more punishment than what most people would get,” Barrett said.
Barrett is the latest Padres player to be suspended.
San Diego’s other catcher, Josh Bard, served a two-game suspension last week. He had one game trimmed off his original three-game suspension for a confrontation with umpires at Pittsburgh on May 31 after he hit what appeared to be a home run that was changed to a double.
Left-hander David Wells has appealed his seven-game suspension and $3,000 fine for his animated argument with an umpire following his ejection for questioning calls on July 7.
All-Star right-hander Chris Young served a five-game suspension for his role in a bench-clearing brawl at the Chicago Cubs on June 16. The Padres tweaked their rotation so that Young didn’t miss a start. He sat out the final four games before the break and the first game after it.
