Midnight Madness rocks Assembly Hall

By Jeff LaBelle

When the men’s basketball team wasn’t rocking on the bench during dance performances, it was dominating the court at Midnight Madness Friday night.

Following dance routines by Alpha Phi Alpha, “The Brickheadz” and Muntu Dance Theater, the Illini men’s basketball teams took to the court for a three-point contest, dunk contest and a team scrimmage.

Guard Trent Meachum led all shooters in the three-point contest with 13 points and Mike Davis secured the dunk contest throne in front of 12,000 pink-shirt wearing Illini fans.

After getting knocked out of the dunk competition in the first round, Jeffrey Jordan, son of Chicago Bulls great Micheal Jordan, put on a replica of his dad’s jersey and attempted a retro between-the-legs dunk.

In two attempts, he was unsuccessful.

Over 20,000 pink T-shirts, which served as tickets to the event, were sold and $47,500 was raised to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer charities. Orange Crush chairs presented head coach Bruce Weber with a $7,500 oversized check after the event.

The scrimmage, largely a dunk-fest itself, featured forwards Brian Randle, Brian Carlwell and center Shaun Pruitt, among others, trading dunks on both ends of the court. Randle, in particular, got the crowd going with multiple one- and two-handed dunks following drives down the free throw lane.

During the early dance performances, guard Chris Hicks and forward Brian Carlwell began dancing courtside, prompting new assistant coach Jerrance Howard to direct the attention of Illini recruits D.J. Richardson, Brandon Paul and Joseph Bertrand to the Illini bench.
