Illinois prep star signs

By David Just

The Simeon pipeline keeps on flowing for Bruce Weber and the Illinois basketball team.

Weber announced the signing of Stan Simpson to a national letter of intent on Wednesday. The 6-feet-9, 220-pound forward transferred to Simeon High School last summer after playing at Leo High School for head coach Noah Cannon.

“We are excited to sign Stan and feel he will be a versatile big man for us with his ability to play both the power forward and center positions,” Weber said in a press release.

Simpson averaged 18 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks during his junior season at Leo. He earned All-Catholic League honors and led the team to the 2007 Sectional finals where the Lions were defeated by Simeon.

“(Simpson’s) strength as a junior was more rebounding, shot blocking and scoring down low,” Weber said. “He can score with his back to the basket and has worked hard on his skill development and post moves.”

The Chicago native was named special mention all-state by the Chicago Tribune and honorable mention all-state by the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He is rated a three-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Simpson joins Nick Anderson, Deon Thomas, Bryant Notree, Ervin Small, Kevin Turner and current junior Calvin Brock as Simeon alumni to suit up for the Illini.
