Brad Hoelzer scored twice and DJ Kohler turned aside 11 shots as the Illinois hockey club swept Western Michigan with a 4-0 victory Saturday.

Neither team found the net in the first period as the Illini struggled to establish the pace of the game. Hoelzer finally scored the game’s first goal just past the 15-minute mark in the second period, scoring on a long shot from the blue line.

The Illini found their form in the third period, scoring three goals on 28 shots on goal. Andy Betourne’s empty-net goal in the game’s waning seconds proved to be the exclamation point on the victory.

Having secured its 15th win with the sweep, Illinois will face in-state rival Illinois State next weekend in the final series before semester break.
