The No. 15 Fighting Illini wrestling team couldn’t hang on to an early 10-0 lead at Friday night’s dual against No. 6-ranked Michigan, and eventually fell in Ann Arbor, Mich., 22-16.

Illinois (8-2, 0-1) started strong versus Michigan (15-4, 2-1) by getting a pin from No. 9 Gabe Flores (125 pounds) and No. 9 Jimmy Kennedy (133) major decision. The Wolverines then went on a six-match win streak, including an upset of No. 1 Mike Poeta at the hands of Michigan’s Jeff Marsh, and they never looked back.

The Illini narrowed the deficit by earning decision victories from No. 13 Patrick Bond (197) and No. 19 John Wise (HWT), 4-2 and 9-4, respectively. But Michigan’s previous streak was too much.

Head coach Mark Johnson’s squad will look to rebound Sunday when the team hosts Penn State at 1 p.m.
