Softball falls to Big Ten rival 2-0

By Kate Munson

On Wednesday, the Fighting Illini exploded offensively, driving in 16 runs to cover the eight allowed by Illini pitching.

But Friday was a different story for Illinois (24-24, 3-8 Big Ten) as senior pitcher Claire DeVreese went seven innings, throwing six strikeouts and not allowing a walk. Minnesota (22-12, 5-4 Big Ten) pushed just two runs across the plate in the game.

“(Claire) really worked hard the past couple of days,” head coach Terri Sullivan said. “She came out with a really good game plan, but the team wins and loses together.”

Meanwhile, Illini bats were unable to muster a single run against Minnesota junior pitcher Briana Hassett as the Orange and Blue fell to the Golden Gophers 2-0.

The Illini have a second chance against Minnesota on Saturday at Eichelberger Field at Martin Stadium.
