Illini’s McGrory stripped of bronze medal, wins gold instead

The Illini’s Amanda McGrory thought she won the bronze medal in the 5,000m race on Wednesday at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. However, due to a tragic crash in the middle of the race, officials disqualified the results and athletes were told they would have to race again. And the re-run could not have gone any better for McGrory on Friday, as she came out with a gold medal.

As the current world record holder in the women’s 5,000m, McGrory won the race with a time of 12:29.07 in her Paralympic Games debut. McGrory competes in both wheelchair basketball and track and field at Illinois, where she is coached by Paralympic track and field team member, Adam Bleakney.
