ESPN reports Illini offensive coordinator to become New Mexico’s head coach

Last updated on May 13, 2016 at 06:05 p.m.

According to sources close to ESPN, Illini offensive coordinator Mike Locksley will be leaving the program to take over the vacant head coaching position at New Mexico. For the past two seasons, Locksley’s name has been tied to numerous head coaching positions, including Clemson, Syracuse and even mild rumors he was in the running for the Tennesse job recently filled by Lane Kiffin.

A person answering the phone at New Mexico Athletic Director Paul Krebs’ office said Krebs is not talking to the media today and that there will be a press conference Tuesday.

Locksley is considered a talented recruiter and one of the top black coaches in the FBS. If the reports are true, Locksley would become the fourth African American coach in the FBS. Nothing has been made official yet by the Illinois athletic department.
