California ends Illinois’ tournament run

By Kate Munson

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The No. 9 national seed Illini traveled to Penn State for an NCAA regional matchup against No. 8 national seed California on Friday.

But their volleyball season ended there as they fell to the Golden Bears (22-25, 22-25, 22-25).

The Fighting Illini defense was unable to contain a potent Cal offense, as all three Golden Bears’ outside hitters posted double-digit kills. Senior Am’ra Solomon lead the way for the Cal squad, tallying 13 kills while hitting at a .619 clip.

Sophomore Laura DeBruler provided most of the offense for Illinois with 18 kills, but she hit just .208 for the match.

Penn State defeated California on Saturday to advance to the national semifinals. The Nittany Lions will face Nebraska in Omaha, Neb., this weekend.
